5 Tree Care Tips For 2019
There are many reasons to maintain trees on your property, whether in your home or office environment. They’re an attractive addition to your living space, but also add to your overall property value and have numerous health benefits, to boot.
There’s a lot to gain from maintaining a tree. But, like all good assets, you’ve got to put in the work in order to keep up their overall viability. With this in mind that we’re bringing you five tree care tips for good looking, healthy trees in 2019.
Get To Pruning
This is something many tree owners consider, but many also tend to put off indefinitely. Pruning has many benefits for tree owners, from aesthetics to the overall health of your plant.
There’s the issue of safety and visibility from the outside, for starters. When it comes to property, the norm is to keep your trees and structures confined to your own property. Any “creeping” can get you in trouble with your neighbors, passers-by, and your local municipality. Prevent overhangs, come in under a clearance height of 10 feet, and prevent trees from obscuring any nearby views.
Start Using Mulch
All things being equal, there are a lot of competitors in your yard, all vying for the same nutrients. Grass, in particular, competes for water and nutrients in a big way and can slow the growth of your tree if it creeps into its soil. This is where mulch comes in.
You can buy mulch at a Walmart or most standard grocery stores. Typically, you won’t need to buy anything too expensive to get the job done. And the job you’ll be doing is to enrich the soil around the tree. For best results, apply a layer of organic mulch over the crown of your tree roots, around 2-to-4 inches deep and avoid piling too much up in any area or you might smother your tree.
Keep Up Your Watering
More often than not, the simplest advice is the best, and it doesn’t get simpler than watering your plans. Soaking your roots through once a week will serve you better in the long run than if you frequently give your trees a light watering.
For best results, penetrate the top 12-to-18 inches of soil with water, wetting as much of the root area as possible. And remember that no tree is safe during a dry period, and even older trees will need a refresher.
Topping: Avoid At All Costs
Cutting off a huge number of your tree’s branches to leave a series of stubs is known as “topping”, and it is far too extreme a measure for us to recommend it.
Pruning your trees this severely can cause long-term damage that they might not ever snap back from. They can be left vulnerable to insects, which increases their risk of various infections. It’s perfectly fine to trim a tree when it gets in the way or when the limbs become sickly, but any company that recommends topping should be avoided.
Invest In An Arborist’s Services
Our last piece of advice for 2019 is to pull the trigger and bring an arborist into your home to assess your tree professionally. Objective advice from a tree maintenance expert will set you up to deal with any number of potential problems, down the line. And that’s the kind of peace of mind that makes tree ownership a real pleasure.
