Young Tree Care Checklist
Trees are a great, low maintenance option for adding onto your home or living space. What they aren’t, however, is no maintenance. Healthy trees only grow with a helping hand and some of that less glamorous routine maintenance to help protect them and encourage them to thrive.
Join us today for our official four-step young tree care checklist, and get ready for a long, healthy relationship with your tree.
Cleaning
Trees aren’t furniture, but in many ways, we have to treat them the same way we do the things around our house. Most importantly, we have to organize them. Remove any excessive debris from around the tree itself, from branches to leaves and even fallen fruit.
Once this has been removed, inspect the trunk for any signs of disease or infestations. These problems can develop early, so it’s best to catch them before they progress too far. In this regard, a certified arborist like Action Tree Care can be a huge help.
Mulch
Good, healthy mulch helps to maintain your soil’s moisture and inhibit the growth of weeds. This is particularly useful for trees up to 10 years old, helping them to absorb the nutrients they need in order to stay healthy and grow strong over time.
Maintain a thickness of between three and four inches, and remove any mulch that is in direct contact with the tree trunk.
Pruning
For the most part, the perfect time for pruning is during the dormant months of winter, during which time trees tend to slow their growth. That being said, it’s always a good idea to remove any limbs that might damage the tree, bystanders or your property, no matter the time of year. When this issue comes up, jump on the opportunity to identify and remove branches as needed.
Watering
If you find water collecting near your tree, you’ll want to take the time to adjust your sprinkler system accordingly. Young trees may often need more water than their older counterparts, but root rot is a real thing and often follows from trees sitting in puddles of water for long periods of time.
You may also want to work on your soil drainage system, in an attempt to wick water away more quickly.
