Just like animal and human babies, newly planted and young trees need the same amount of care and attention. Because they are still growing, they may need to be watered once a week. Today we will discuss how to proper young tree care.

How often should you water your tree?

The truth is, there is no set number of times you should water your tree. Be sure to exclude zero though, as hydration is key to proper young tree care. The best way to tell if your tree is hydrated is by digging about half a foot in the soil and around the root ball. If it is noticeably moist, your tree is hydrated, but if it is dry the  opposite is true.

Generally, keeping your tree moist means about 5-10 gallons of water per week during its first and second season of growth.. If you find that the soil is dry, pour about 5 gallons of water into the soil. Periodically check back to see just how long it takes the soil to get dry again. Once you have found the sweet spot, it is up to you to make sure that the soil stays moist.

How to Protect Your Young Tree

Aside from giving your tree the proper nutrients, you must also make sure it is protected in its youth. Mulching is one of the best way to protect the area around a tree, while locking in moisture in the soil. Mulch also protects the area from other weeds that might compete with the tree.

Stay away from herbicides and pesticides that can cause damage, and stunt the growth of you tree. Be careful with lawn equipment as well, as damage to the tree can lead to it not being able to transport water up itr trunk.
